3. A coin is dropped from your hand 2.0 m above the floor.

a) In how many seconds will it reach the floor?

b) What is the velocity of the coin just before it strikes the floor?

4. Free fall in vacuum: a steel ball and a pith ball with the same diameter are loaded into the top of a large tube, which is evacuated to create a very low- pressure environment. The two balls are released simultaneously from the same level to fall to the bottom of the tube. Which one of the following statements is true?

a.) Steel ball reaches the bottom first. Why?

b.) Pith ball reaches the bottom first. Why?

c.) Two balls reach the bottom simultaneously. Why?

Explanation / Answer

here,

3)

initial height of the coin , h0 = 2 m

a)

let the time taken to reach the floor be t

h0 = u * t + 0.5 * g * t^2

2 = 0 + t + 0.5 * 9.8 * t^2

t = 0.64 s

the time taken is 0.64 s

b)

the velocity of the coin just before it strikes the floor , v = u + g * t

v = 0 + 9.8 * 0.64 = 6.26 m/s

the velocity of the coin just before it strikes the floor is 6.26 m/s
