Question
A 18 g ball of clay traveling east at 3.2 m/s collides with a 30 g ball of clay traveling north at 2.0 m/s. What are the speed and the direction of the resulting 48 g ball of clay? m/s north of east Three identical train cars, coupled together, are rolling east at 2.2 m/s . A fourth car traveling east at 4.4 m/s catches up with the three and couples to make a four-car train. A moment later, the train car's hit a ?fth car that was at rest on the tracks, and it couples to make a five-car train. What is the speed of the ?ve-car train? m/sExplanation / Answer
1) applying COM in both directions we get:-
18*3.2 = 48*v where v is resulting velocity of the clay
=>v = 1.2m/s eastward
now again applying it in north we get as:-
30*2=48*v
=>1.25m/s northwards
hence the resultant = 1.732m/s
and the direction will be 46.17degrees
2) let the mass of each car be m
and let the speed of the car after joining be v
hence applying COM we get:-
3m*2.2+m*4.4 m*0 = 5m*v
=>v=2.2m/s
