Question

Tarzan spies a 39kg chimpanzee in severe danger, so he swings to the rescue. He adjusts his strong, but very light, vine so that he will first come to rest 4.8s after beginning his swing, at which time his vine makes a 12 degree angle with the verticle.

Part A

How long is Tarzan's vine, assuming that he swings at the bottom end of it?

Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Part B

What are the frequency of Tarzan's swing?

Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Part C

What are the amplitude (in degrees) of Tarzan's swing?

Express your answer using three significant figures.

Part D

Just as he passes through the lowest point in his swing, Tarzan nabs the chimp from the ground and sweeps him out of the jaws of danger. If Tarzan's mass is 73kg , find the frequency of the swing with Tarzan holding onto the grateful chimp. (with units)

Part E

If Tarzan's mass is 73kg , find the amplitude (in degrees) of the swing with Tarzan holding onto the grateful chimp.

Express your answer using three significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

T = 2pi * sqrt (L/g), now solve for L;

L = gT^2 / (4pi^2), now plug in your variables;

g= 9.8 m/s/s
T= 4.8 s

L = 9.8*4.3^2 / (4 pi^2) = 4.58 meters

F = sqrt (g/L) / 2pi;
= sqrt (9.8/4.58) / 2 pi
= 0.23 Hz

we can check this because frequency if the inverse of period; ie. 1/4.3 = 0.23

Amplitude is simply the straight line distance between the release point of the pendulum to the tangent neat with the ground;

C) A = 4.58sin12 = 0.95 Meters

the only thing I can think of is Tarzan's height. Since his height was not given, the assumption I made is that his mass it at the bottom of the vine. If he is hanging on and swinging, then L would be different. And, if his feet are at the bottom of the vine, then the effective length of the vine would be different as well.
