Explanation / Answer

Topic :Biomedical waste management

# A study to assess effect of information booklet on the knowledge of class 4 servants regarding biomedical waste management in intensive care units in selected hospital.

Objectives were.

1. To assess the knowledge of class 4 servants regarding biomedical waste management by administering pre-test scores.

2. To assess the knowledge of class 4 servants regarding biomedical waste management in terms of post-test scores after administering planned teaching.
3. To assess effect of information booklet by comparing pre and post test knowledge scores.

# H01:
There will be significant difference between the pre and post test knowledge scores among class 4 servants regarding biomedical waste management.

H02:
There will be significant association between the levels of knowledge regarding biomedical waste management with selected demographic variables.

# DELIMITATION:
The study was confined to,
1. The class 4 servants who are working in intensive care units.
2. The class 4 servants who are willing to participate in the study.
3. The study was confined to selected hospital.
4. The study was confined to one group pretest and posttest.

# VARIABLES:

1. INDEPENDENT VARIABLES:
Information booklet is an independent variable in this study.

2. DEPENDENT VARIABLE:
Knowledge of class 4 servants regarding biomedical waste management is the dependent variable.

# ETHICAL ASPECT:
1. Written informed consent will be taken from samples who will have full right to information regarding the purpose of study.
2. The privacy and confidentiality of the information will be ensured. Due permission will be obtained from the authorities.
3. The individual participants have full right to walk away from the study without assigning any reason to investigator.

# RESEARCH APPROACH :Qantitative approach

# SETTING OF THE STUDY:
The study will be conducted on class 4 servants of intensive care units of selected hospital.

# POPULATION:
All Class 4 servants of intensive care units of selected hospital.

# RSEARCH DESIGN:
The research design selected for the study was pre-experimental approach.

# SAMPLE:
The sample consisted of 30 class servants from intensive care units ofselected hospital.

# SAMPLING TECHNIQUE:
The samples were selected based on pre-determined inclusion criteria and based on their availability.

# INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION CRITERIA:

INCLUSION CRITERIA:
All the class 4 servants of intensive care units.

Class 4 Servants who are willing to participate.
Class 4 servant who knows Hindi language.

EXCLUSION CRITERIA:
Class 4 servants who are not willing to participate.
Class 4 servants who don't understand Hindi language.

# PLAN FOR TOOL PREPARATION

# TOOL AND TECHNIQUE
The tool was Questionnaire.
It consist of following parts.

Section 1
Consist of introduction, definition, importance of biomedical waste management and biomedical waste management rule

Section 2
Consist of Classification of biomedical waste.

Section 3
Consist of Sources of biomedical waste.

Section 4
Consist of   Biomedical waste management process.

Section 5
Consist of infection control.
The technique used is using information booklet and self-reporting.

# VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY:

The validity of the tool was done before commencing the study. The validity of the tool was ensured by getting it assessed by the experts and by getting their opinions /suggestions. Some suggestions given during the validation were incorporated in the tool.

#DATA COLLECTION

The data gathering process started from after getting the required permission from the respective authorities.

The data collection was done in 4 stages.

Stage 1:

The pre-test questionnaire was administered to the group of class IV employees working in intensive care units of selected government hospital regarding biomedical waste management.

The response received through questionnaire were assessed and based on their correct responses, the gaps in their knowledge were identified by the investigators.

Stage 2:

Information booklet was prepared with attractive pictures.

Stage 3:

Information booklet was given to the samples after pre-test.

Stage 4:

The post questionnaire was administered after 2 days to collect post data from the group, so as to assess the change in their knowledge.

DATA ANALYSIS:

The data collected from the samples was grouped and analysed with the help of statistical measures,

Part 1consists of demographic data,

Part 2consists of multiple choice questions. Each correct answer carried value of '1' mark and each wrong answer carried '0' mark.

# PLAN FOR DATA ANALYSIS:

The researchers planned to analyse the collected data by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Descriptive statistics:

Frequency and percentage distribution were used to analyse the demographic data.

Knowledge of class IV employees before and after providing information booklet was analysed by frequency and percentage.

PART I

Inferential statistics:

Comparison of knowledge between pre-test and post-test of class IV employeesin groups according to demographic characteristics analysed by ‘t’- test. Data analysis was planned based on the objectives of the study.

The demographic data was analysed in terms of frequency and percentage.

PART II:

For the analysis of knowledge score, knowledge score was divided into five sections and then analysed in terms of frequency and percentage as follows.

Section I:
Knowledge scores regarding Introduction of Biomedical waste.

Section II:
Knowledge scores regarding Classification of Biomedical waste.

Section III:
Knowledge scores regarding Sources of Biomedical waste.

Section IV & VI:
Knowledge scores regarding Steps of Biomedical waste management process.

Section V:
Knowledge scores regarding Colour coding of Biomedical waste management.

Section VII:
Knowledge scores regarding Infection control.

PART III:
Analysis of knowledge scores with the significance of difference level of 0.05, between pre and post test scores in the area of knowledge section wise by 't' test.

INTERPRETATION:

Information booklet is effective in increasing the knowledge of biomedical waste management among Class IV employees.

# CONCLUSION:
‘t’ test was conducted to find out the effect of information booklet on knowledge regarding biomedical waste management, reveals that there is highly significant gain in post-test knowledge score, which proved that theinformation booklet is useful in increasing the knowledge of biomedical waste management among class IV employees.
