Question

In this scene from the 1979 film, "Kramer vs. Kramer," Joanna (played by Meryl Streep) informs Ted (played by Dustin Hoffman) that she is leaving him. Though this is an unfortunate common occurence today, the entire film captured many of the emotional, practical and relational issues mentioned in Grulan's chapter. As you watch the clip, imagine some of the issues that led Joanna to this drastic action and highlight them. Feel free also to share your personal views regarding the subject. In 150 to 250 words give your reaction to the interview and any personal insights into the subject.    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_3nKyL6BcA

Explanation / Answer

The visual clip is a reflection of the peaks of Joanna’s dissatisfaction and despair with her marriage and husband, with Ted’s life predominantly revolving around his work being the causal factor. The crisis is such that the dynamics of the family goes beyond any possible repair.

In my opinion, this is a clear scenario of a family lacking cohesion, flexibility and communication, that are the three ideal components for the health functioning and sustenance of a family, in ways that both the family as a whole, as well as individual members mutually benefit. Reaping the benefits of being a part of a family involves an equal mix of compromise as well as individuality-seeking, without which neither party is going to feel a sense of belongingness and being valued.

In conclusion, most of the roles in a family are played equally by each of the members, with or without their awareness, also taking into consideration the interacting context and each member’s personality, and the roles are what keep the family intact.
