Question

An 8.25kg point mass and a 13.0kg point mass are held in place 50.0 cm apart. A particle of mass m is released from a point between the two masses 16.0cm from the 8.25kg mass along the line connecting the two fixed masses. find the magnitud of the acceleration of the particle.

i looked up the similar problems in the chegg website, and only the numbers vary... doing Fnet= Gm*((m1/.16^2)-(m2/.34^2))----> a= 1.399x10^-8 m/s^2

this keeps coming up wrong on masteringphysics.com.... what seems to be the problem? all the responses say they are right using this method.

help please!!!!

Explanation / Answer

gravitational force due to one mass is independent of due to other mass.

force due to 8.25 kg mass F1=Gm8.25/0.162

force due to 13 kg mass F2=Gm13/0.342

net force=|F1-F2|

net accelearation=net force/m
