Question
Thin lens Equation
1. Calculate the image position and height of a 2.0-cm-tall object is 40 cm in front of a converging lens that has a 20 cm focal length.
2. Calculate the image position and height of a 1.0-cm-tall object is 10 cm in front of a converging lens
that has a 30 cm focal length
3. Calculate the image position and height of a 2.0-cm-tall object is 15 cm in front of a diverging lens
that has a -20 cm focal length.
4. Calculate the image position and height of a 1.0-cm-tall object is 60 cm in front of a diverging lens
that has a -30 cm focal length.

Explanation / Answer
1) 1/p + 1/q = 1/f
1/40 + 1/q = 1/20
1/q = 1/20 - 1/40 = 1/40
q = 40 cm
M = -q/p = -40/40 = -1
so h' = -2 cm
2) 1/10 + 1/q = 1/30
1/q = 1/30 - 1/10 = 1/30 - 3/30 = -2/30 = -1/15
q = -15 cm
M = -q/p = 15/10 = 1.5
h' = 1.5*1 = 1.5 cm
3)
1/15 + 1/q = -1/20
1/q = -1/20 - 1/15 = -3/60 - 4/60 = -7/60
q = -60/7=-8.57 cm
M = 8.57/15 = 0.571
h' = 1.14 cm
4) 1/60 + 1/q = -1/30
1/q = -2/60 - 1/60 = -3/60 = -1/20
q = -20 cm
M = 20/60 = 1/3
h' = 1/3*1 = 0.33
