Question

Thin films interference we have seen that when light strikes a surface with a different index of refraction the incident light split into reflected beams and refracted beams. The total phase different between any two adjacent beams can lead to either consrtuctive or destructive interference. For each case give several applications of this situation.

Case 1: Beam 1 & 2 interfere constructively (maximum reflection) . Beam 3 & 4 interfere destructively (minimum transmission)

Case 2: Beam 1 & 2 interfere destructively ( minimum reflection.). Beam 3 & 4 interfere constructively (maximum transmission)

Explanation / Answer

case 1: 1 and 2 constructive interefer, so the path difference has to be multiple of lambda. this means that 1 and two would be seen prominently on this kind of interference.
case 1: 3 and 4 destructive interefer, so the path difference has to be odd multiple of lambda/2. this means that 3 and 4 would not be seen prominently on this kind of interference.
case 2: 1 and 2 destructive interefer, so the path difference has to be odd multiple of lambda/2. this means that 1 and 2 would not be seen prominently on this kind of interference.
case 1: 3 and 4 constructive interefer, so the path difference has to be multiple of lambda. this means that 3 and 4 would be seen prominently on this kind of interference.
