Question
An 90 cm tall, 65 cm wide tank is filled to the brim with water. The side is marked every 10 cm and 0cm appears to be barely submerged (at the top). s you look from the opposite wall with your eye level to the top of the water:a) Can you see the marks from the top of the tank goingdown? What about the bottom of the tank going up? ( Are 90 & 80 cm visible? re 0 and 10 cm visible?)
b) Which is the lowest (or highest, depending on yourresponse above) mark that you can see in the tank?
c) Explain in words how your results would change if thetank was filled with glass or diamond?
Explanation / Answer
a) Snell law for refraction we get
n1 sin 90 = n2 sin theta
sin 90 is the incident angle where eye is placed. and n1 =1 for air and n2 = 1.33 for water so
(1) (1) = 1.33 sin theta
theta = 48.75 degrees.
now tan 48.75 = Y /65 so Y = 65 tan 48.75 = 74cm.
You cannot see the bottom line. The maximum possible visible is 70cm line.
a) No we cannot see all the lines
b) able to see upto 70cm line.
c) when the material is glass(1.5) or diamond ( >2), the refractive index increases and the angle of refraction becomes smaller and we will not be able to see even the 70 line.
