Question
Help with Static Equilibrium
A 260-g meter stick is placed on a table top such that its 100-cm end sticks straight out over the edge of the table. A 40-g mass M is placed on the 75-cm mark on the meter stick. The meter stick is slowly slid out from the edge of the table top so that more and more of its length hangs out over the edge. At what position on the meter stick (that is, at what centimeter marking) will the meter stick and mass combination just remain balanced on the edge of the table top?
Explanation / Answer
M = 260
m = 40
moment about CM is zero
M*(x-50) = m*(75-x)
260*x - 13000 = 3000 - 40x
300x = 16000
x = 53.33 cm
