1.) Two wires are parallel and one is directly above the other. Each has a length of 50.0 m and a mass per unit length of 0.020 kg/m. However, the tension in the wire A is 6.60 102 N, and the tension in the wire B is 3.40 102 N. Transverse wave pulses are generated simultaneously, one at the left end of wire A and one at the right end of wire B. The pulses travel toward each other. How much time does it take until the pulses pass each other?
2.) Suppose you are part of a team that is trying to break the sound barrier with a jet-powered car, which means that it must travel faster than the speed of sound in air. In the morning, the air temperature is 0
Explanation / Answer
2 ) velocity is proportional to square root of absolute temperature
v1 is the velocity at 273 K and v2 is the velocity at 273+ 45 = 318 K . Then the velocity of sound at 42 C is
v1/v2 = sqrt(T1/T2)
v2 = v1xsqrt(315/273) = 357.24 m/s
This is the velocity that has to be exceeded by the car.
1 ) Time required to meet = 50/(magnitude of relative velocity
Relative velocity = v1+v2 = [sq rt[6.6*10^2] + sq rt[3.4*10^2]]/sq rt(0.020) = 312.04 m/s
Hence required time = 50/312.04= 0.16 s
