In which of these scenarios do you hear a higher pitched sound? Explain. A police car with siren sounding is stationary and you approach it with a speed vo. You are stationary and the same police car with a siren sounding approaches you at speed vo. What is the difference in pitch between the above two scenarios if v0 = 90 mi/hr, the frequency of the police siren is 300 Hz and the air temperature is 20 degree C? What is the difference in pitch in (b) if (hypothetically) v0 is one-third the speed of sound?

Explanation / Answer

a)(i)f=f0*(c+v0)/c=f0*(1+v/c)

(ii)f=f0*(c/c-v)

Clearly, the f apparent for the second case is larger and we hear a higher pitched sound.

b)v0=90mi/h=40.234m/s

c=343.2m/s

f1=335.2Hz

f2=339.8Hz

f2-f1=4.7Hz

c)f1=300*(1+1/3)=400Hz

f2=300*(1/(1-1/3))=450Hz

f2-f1=50Hz
