Question

A 60kg crate is pulled by a force of 100N, directed at an angle ? above the horizontal as shown. The rope is not pulled hard enough to cause the crate to move.

* (a) If the angle that the rope makes with the horizontal is ? = 36.5o, what are the magnitudes of the normal force and the static friction force on the crate?

Normal force =

Static friction force =

* (b) If the angle that the rope makes with the horizontal is instead ? = 53.5o, now what are the magnitudes of the normal force and the static friction force on the crate?

Normal force =

Static friction force =

Explanation / Answer

a) N = mg - F*sin36.5

N = (60*9.8)-(100*0.5498)

Normal force = N = 533.02 N

Static friction force = fs = Fx = F*cos36.5 = 80.385 N

#b)

N = mg - F*sin53.5

N = (60*9.8)-(100*0.8038)

Normal force = 507.62 N

Static friction force = fs = Fx = F*cos36.5 = 59.48 N
