Question

Empathy

Often times, people who witness individuals with schizophrenia experience bizarre behavior such as hallucination and/or delusions immediately jump to negative judgments. After watching the videos, it is my hope that you see that these disorders are brain disorders. Clients are not at fault. With this in mind, I hope we can practice empathy when we see people who may be acting outside of what we might consider "the norm."

Why do you think people are quick to judge others? Please answer with a minimum of 3 sentences.

Explanation / Answer

Being judgmental comes very naturally to human beings. It's the most difficult to be non-judgmental about someone. A person sees or meets another person, the first thing he does is, pass a judgment about the way another person is dressed or about how clumsy she was. You would never sit back and think 'why was the person the way she was'. What you see is only for a few minutes or for half an hour of her 24 hours. She would have just had a rough day and is trying hard to control her emotions and thus, ends up being clumsy. The day a person begins to empathize, he may be the most non-judgmental person ever.

It's easier to judge someone and call them mental. But little do you know what they have been going through in their lives. It's extremely important to empathize and 'to feel how it is to be in another's shoes'.
