Question
An object is placed 10 m before a convex lens with focal length 5.8 m . Another convex lens is placed 9.95 m behind the ?rst lens with a focal length 3.3 m (see the ?gure below). Note: Make a ray diagram sketch in order to check your numerical answer
(1) At what distance is the ?rst image from the
?rst lens?
Answer in units of m
(2) What is the magni?cation of the ?rst image?
(3) At what distance is the second image from thesecond lens? Answer in units of m
(4) What is the magni?cation of the ?nal image,when compared to the initial object?
Explanation / Answer
Part 1)
Apply 1/f = 1/p + 1/q
1/5.8 = 1/10 + 1/q
q = 13.8 m
Part 2)
M = -q/p
M = -13.8/10
M = -1.38 (Negative means inverted)
Part 3)
Since the lenses are 9.95 m apart, the first image is 13.8 - 9.95 = 3.86 m behind the second lens.
So 1/f = 1/p + 1/q
1/3.3 = 1/-3.86 + 1/q
q = 1.78 m
M = -q/p for this lens
M = -1.78/-3.86
M = .461
Thus the total M = .461(-1.38)
M = -.636 (Again, the negative means inverted)
