Question

Psychology is the study of behavior and mental processes. Throughout the semester, we’ve explored this topic from many perspectives, from the basics of neurons, the brain, sensation, and perception to consciousness and sleep, to learning, memory, cognition, intelligence, and language, to development, motivation, emotion, stress, and more. The following questions ask you to review and summarize some of the key parts of this material.

What is intelligence? How does it differ from cognition? Describe the three theories of intelligence: G-Factor, Multiple Intelligences, and the Triarchic Theory of Intelligence.

Explanation / Answer

There are many definitions for Intelligence. Some say that it's the ability to perceiving, processing and reasoning. It is also attributed to one's capacity for logic, self awareness, learning and emotion. It's about collecting knowledge, storing it and recalling and using it in a relevant environment or context.
Cognition is the general ability to perceive, process and reason but intelligence is the ability to excel in those abilities. It depends on the intensity and speed of acquiring and processing knowledge accurately.
The g-factor theory of intelligence suggests that intelligence is common for all. But theory was later proved wrong as cognition is common to all but intelligence differs.
Howard Gardner proposed multiple intelligences such as musical, bodily-kinesthetic, logical-mathematical, linguistic, spatial, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. He also proved that these seven intelligence will be with everyone but the degree or intensity depends on individuals. Not all will be good at all the seven.
Sternberg proposed the Triarchic Theory of intelligence where he proposes three types of intelligence a person possesses such as analytical, Creative and Practical.
