Question

Three blocks, each having a mass of 1.01 kg, are connected by rigid rods of negligible mass and are supported by a frictionless surface. Forces F1 and F2, of magnitude 5.05 N and10.1 N respectively, are applied to the ends of the blocks as shown in the figure below. Find the forces acting on block B (the +x direction is to the right).

I've tried this problem a couple times already, and for the first part I was able to get 5.05 N in the positive direction, but I can't seem to get the second part.

The magnitude of the force applied by the rod on the left is? and The magnitude of the force applied by the rod on the right is?

Explanation / Answer

lets say N1 be normal force actting between Block A and Block B

lets say N2 be normal force actting between Block C and Block B

So,

Net force on Complete system is F1 + F2 = 3.03a

=> 15.15 = 3.03a => a = 5 m/s

Force on Block A is F2 - N1 = 1.01a

=> 10.1 - N1 = 1.01 * 5

=>N1 = 5.05 N

So from left force on Block B is 5,05 N

Now Force on Block C => F1 + N2 = 1.01a

=> 5.05 + N2 = 1.01*5 => N2 = 0 N

So from right force on Block B = 0 N
