Question

We often use schemata to help make quick decisions and snap judgments about a person or situation. This can serve us well because those basic impressions and immediate interpretations enable us to make decisions quickly when needed. However the downside here is sometimes we are incorrect in our decision making or judgments as a result. Describe a time you fo initial impression about something or someone based o ou were incorrect. How did your quick decision/snap judgment negatively impaet the situation? rmed an n schemata only to later find

Explanation / Answer

I think the most striking personal example that I can give about this situation is the impressions I had about my friend during the first time we met and how much they have changed now. She hails from a Muslim family and during our first interaction, she had adorned a hijab. Although she never expressed this herself, I assumed that she would not like to join me for social outings and parties (as her religion prohibits drinking). As a result, she often used to remain invited in many occasions. However, after about a year or so, I bumped into her in a party and was surprised and shocked to see her in a completely different avatar than what I used to see her in college. After having a hearty conversation with her, I realised how wrong I was to form stereotypes about her without even having interacted with her sufficiently. I regretted my last actions of excluding her from many group events based on my suppositions.
