Question
The elecrton volt (eV) is a unit of energy. One eV is the amount of energy needed to push one electron through one volt. The Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland can produce beams of protons at 3.5 TeV.
A) A mosquito has a mass of approximately 2mg and can fly at approximately .67 m/s. What is the kinetic energy of one proton in the LHC in mosquito units?
B) There are 1331 bunches of protons in each LHC beam. Each bunch has 1.15 x 1011 protons. the USS Nimitz has a mass of 1 x 108 kg and can achieve a maximum speed of 58.3 km/h. What is the total energy of the LHC beam in terms of kinetic energy of the USS Nimitz?
Explanation / Answer
a)
here , Ke of mosquito = 0.5 * 2*10^-6*.67^2
Ke = 4.489*10^-7 J
Ke = 2.8 TeV
therefore Energy of 1 proton = 3.5/2.8
Energy of 1 proton = 1.25 Mosquito
b)
u = 58.3 km/h = 16.19 m/s
KE of USS = 0.5 *1*10^8 * (16.19)^2
KE = 1.311 * 10^10 J
KE = 8.1845 * 10^16 TeV
therefore ,
KE of protons = 1331 * 1.15 * 10^11*3.5/(8.1845 * 10^16)
KE of protons = 0.00655
KE of protons is 0.00655 USS
