Question
Two fighter airplanes are flying in the same direction at 1100 km/hr and are separated by 3 km when the back airplane fires a missile at the front airplane. Determine a. The constant acceleration that the missile must have to catch the front airplane in 5 s. b. The velocity of the missile relative to the front airplane at the time of impact. The constant acceleration that the missile must have to catch the front airplane in 5 s. b. The velocity of the missile relative to the front airplane at the time of impact.Explanation / Answer
speed of the two airplanes = 305.5556 m/s
destance between the two planes = 3000 m
let us observe the second plane wrt 1'st plane
so initial speed of missile = u = 0 m/s
time taken by missile to hit 2'nd plane is = t = 5 sec.
s = ut + (1/2) *a*t^2
3000 = 0 + (1/2)*a*5^2
a = 240 m /s^2
v = u + at
v = 0 + 240*5
v = 1200 m/s (velocity of missile relative to front plane)
