Question

2.2 Water and solids enter and leave the human body through various means. The masses of water and solids for an average man for one day are shown in Figure 2.19.

(a) Write an algebraic accounting statement for the total solids in the system. Is the system open or closed, steady-state or dynamic, reacting or nonre-acting? Calculate the total solids entering and leaving the system. Since Input does not equal Output, postulate an explanation.

(b) Write an algebraic accounting statement for water in the system. Is the system open or closed, steady-state or dynamic, reacting or nonreacting? Plug the mass of water entering, leaving, and being generated in the system into the algebraic accounting statement. Can all the water be accounted for?

Explanation / Answer

A) Solid entering the system= 432 g

     Solid entering the system= (70+12)g

                                          = 82 g

Since, solid is entering the system and also leaving it. So, system is open.

    System is dynamic and reacting.

Since, solid entering does not equals solid going out, some solid is breaking into water and air in metabolism.

B) Amount of water entering the system= (1000+1200) g

   Amont of water leaving the system= (350 +200+1400+200+400)=2550 g

System is open, dynamic and reacting.

   Amount of water generated=(2550-2200) g= 250 g

All water has been accounted here.
