and 25 Remaining Time Essay Question (8 points) Answer should be approximately 1 to 2 paragraphs and use the relevant biochemical vocabulary to provide an answer. The image below shows a pair of nucleotides in DNA. (a) Identify the two base pairs shown in the image, be sure to identify which one is which. (b) Explain how the term "antiparallel" applies to this structure. (c) What is the name of the sugar molecule found in this structure? (d) Two sequences of DNA were compared, one that was contained 40% of this par and one that contained points compare. Explain your answer. 65% of this pair. How would the two DNAExplanation / Answer
ANSWER (a).
The base pair shown in blue color is GUANINE (purine). Its chemical name is 6-oxy-2-aminopurine.
The base pair shown in red color is CYTOSINE (pyrimidine). Its chemical name is 2-oxy-4aminopyrimidine.
ANSWER (b).
In case of nucleic acids, the phosphate group is attached to 5th carbon of sugar molecule. In the given picture it can be observed that phosphate group (shown in yellow) are in opposite directions. However they run parallely with each other but in oppsite directions. Therefore they are said to be antiparallel to each other.
ANSWER (c).
The sugar molecule present in the given nucleotide is a deoxyribose sugar (pentose). Deoxyribose sugar can be identified by the absence of oxygen at the 2nd carbon of sugar molecule.
ANSWER (d)
If a DNA molecule contain 40% GC content then ultimately it will have 60% AC content. Therefore this DNA molecule will have:
20% - G
20% - C
30% - A
30% - T
While other DNA molecule contain 65% GC content then ultimately it will have 35% AC content. Therefore this DNA molecule will have:
32.5% - G
32.5% - C
17.5% - A
17.5% - T
