Question

A tow truck pulls a car 5.15 km along a horizontal roadway using a cable having a tension of 800 N.

(a) How much work does the cable do on the car if it pulls horizontally?
___J

How much work does the cable do on the car if it pulls at 34.5° above the horizontal?
___ J

(b) How much work does the cable do on the tow truck if it pulls the car horizontally?
___J

How much work does the cable do on the tow truck if it pulls the car at 34.5° above the horizontal?
___J

(c) How much work does gravity do on the car in part (a) if its pulled horizontally?
___J

How much work does gravity do on the car in part (a) of its pulled at an angle of 34.5°?
___ J

Explanation / Answer

In each case the forces are constant and the displacement is along a straight line, so

W = F*s*cosX

A1. when the cable pulls horizontally angle X= 0 deg

W = 800*5.15*10^3*cos 0 deg = 4.12*10^6 J

A2. angle X = 34.5 deg

W = 800*5.15*10^3*cos 34.5 deg = 3.39*10^6 J

B1. This time Angle X = 180 deg

W = 800*5.15*10^3*cos 180 deg = -4.12*10^6 J

B2. This time Angle X = 145.5 deg

W = 800*5.15*10^3*cos 145.5 deg = -3.39*10^6 J

C1. Since Angle X = 90 deg

W = 0 J (As cos 90 = 0 )

C2. Since Angle X = 90 deg

W = 0 J (As cos 90 = 0 )
