Question

Starting with the left-most column, populate the boxes from left to right without skipping empty boxes. Ties should be grouped in the same box. Suppose that a sand-filled barrier is used to stop trucks that lose their breaks at the end of a roadway. Assuming that the barrier applies the same constant force to all of the trucks, rank the distances that the following trucks will travel from the moment they strike the barriers unt they finally stop, from the smallest distance to the largest, given the mass and the initial velocity of the trucks.

Explanation / Answer

Answer: -

A "barrier" is a device that safely redirects, slows, or stops an errant vehicle and prevents a more severe crash or prevents vehicles from entering the work area.

If barrier applies the same constant force to all the trucks, than momentum decides the smallest distance to the largest distance travel by the trucks.

Momentum is given by = m*v

The greater the moemntum of the vehicles, the gretaer the damge in a collision will be. Ligher vehicle may cause less damge because of reduced moemtum. However, the lighter the vehicle, the greater the chances that it eill be damaged in a collison. All objestcts in motion have Kinetic energy (K.E.) and Momentum.

K.E. is energy in motion. More energy of motion a vehicle has, the more time and distance it will take to stop.

a) m= 1900 kg , v= 55 m/s => (K.E.)a = 0.5*m*v^2

=> (K.E.)a = 2873750 J

b) m= 4050 kg , v= 20 m/s => (K.E.)b = 0.5*m*v^2

=> (K.E.)b = 810000 J

c) m= 850 kg , v= 50 m/s => (K.E.)c = 0.5*m*v^2

=> (K.E.)c = 1062500 J

d) m= 3350 kg , v= 10 m/s => (K.E.)d = 0.5*m*v^2

=> (K.E.)d = 167500 J

e) m= 4750 kg , v= 40 m/s => (K.E.)e = 0.5*m*v^2

=> (K.E.)e = 3800000 J

Hence Arrangement from smaller distance to larger distance is

d < b < c < a < e
