Question
A moonshiner makes the error of filling a glass jar to the brim and capping it tightly. The moonshine expands more than the glass when it warms up, in such a way that the volume increases by 0.3% (that is, V/V0 = 3 10-3) relative to the space available. Calculate the force exerted by the moonshine per square centimeter if the bulk modulus is 2.0 109 N/m2, assuming the jar does not break.
1 N/m2.In view of your answer, do you think the jar survives? (Hint: How many atmospheres is this?)
Yes No
Explanation / Answer
del V / Vo = 3*10-3
K ( bulk modolus) = 2*109 N/ m2
bulk modolus = normal stress / volumetric strain
K = F/a / ( del V / Vo)
F/a = K* del V/ Vo
= 3*10-3*2*109
= 6*106 N/m2
force exetred per square centimeter (F/a) = 600 N/cm2 ( 1m = 100 cm)
1 atm(atmospheric) pressure = 1.013*105 N/m2
so F/a = 6*106 N/m2 = 59.23 atm
since 59.23 atm pressure is applied on jar so it can deform or break. Also if materials are tightly constrained they deform or break the container.
