Question
can you help me answer (b) The rotation of polarized light in an optically active medium is found to be approximately proportional to the inverse square of the wavelength. The specific rotation of glucose is 20.5 deg/mm. A glucose solution of unknown concentration is contained in a 11-cm-long tube and is found to rotate linearly polarized light by 0.96 deg. What is the concentration of the solution? Upon passing through a 2-mm-thick quartz plate, red light is rotated about 30 deg. What rotation would you expect for violet light?Explanation / Answer
b) wavelength of red light = 685 nm
wavelength of violet light = 415 nm
rotation is proportional to 1/wavelength2
let k is proportionality constant
=> 20.5 = k/(685*685) => k = 20.5*685*685
So rotation for violet light = k/(415*415) = 20.5*685*685/(415*415) = 55.852 degree Answer
