Question

Conceptual Example 7 provides useful background for this problem. Workers have loaded a delivery truck in such a way that its center of gravity is only slightly forward of the rear axle, as shown in the figure. The mass of the truck and its contents is 6220 kg. Find the magnitudes of the forces exerted by the ground on (a) the front wheels and (b) the rear wheels of the truck.

center of gravity is closer to rear axle which is 0.63m and the length is 2.3m to the front axle from the center of grav

Explanation / Answer

here,

total mass of system = 6220 kg
Solving by using g =10 m/s^2

center of gravity is closer to rear axle which is 0.63m and the length is 2.3m to the front axle from the center of grav

From Newton Second law:

Sum of upwards forces = sum of downwards force

Let:
UPwards force on front wheel
upwards force on rear wheel

F1 + F2 = 6220 kg = 62200 N

distance between F2 from F1 = 2.3 + 0.63 = 2.903 m
Distance of F2 from the centre of gravity = 0.63 m

Now solving by moment about F2 :
F1* 2.93 = 62200 *0.63

F1 = 13374.06 N

F2 = 62200 - 13374.06

F2 = 48825.94 N

as there are two wheel in front and two on rear therefore:

Force on each front wheel = 13374.06/2 = 6687.03 N
Force on each Rear wheel = 48825.94 / 2 = 24415.97 N
