Question

3.

A.) A 60 kg crate rests on a level floor at a shipping dock. An applied force of 500 N will put the box in motion from rest. Once in motion, an applied force of 450 N will move the box at a constant speed. (a) What is the force of static friction between the crate and the floor? (b) What is the force of kinetic friction between the crate and the floor?

B.) A 70 kg baseball player slides into second base. The force of kinetic friction between the player and the ground is 500 N. What was the player’s initial speed if they come to rest in 0.75 s?

Explanation / Answer

A) the force applied to bring the body in motion = force required to overcome static friction

= 500N

force when the body is moving = kinetic friction = 450N

B) retaring force acting on the player = 500

retardation of theplayer = (500/70) = 7.14m/s2

using the motion of equation v =u + at

0 = u + (-7.14)0.75

u = 5.36m/s

players intial speed = 5.36m/s
