Question

Please provide how you came to your answers, thanks in advance.

As a simple pendulum swings back and forth, the forces acting on it are gravity, the tension in the supporting cord and air resistance, (a) Which of these forces, if any, does no work on the pendulum? (b) Which of these forces, if any, does negative work at all times during the motion, (c) Describe the work done by the gravitational force while the pendulum is swinging. Two masses are being lowered at constant speed as shown. Which forces do positive work on M_1? Explain, (b) Which forces do negative work on Explain, (c) Which forces do positive work on M2? Explain, (d) Which forces do negative work on M2? Explain, (e) Do any of your answers to a, b, c or d change if the mass is being lowered but is speeding up? Explain. Can kinetic energy be negative? Explain, (b) Joe, Mary and Tom are all running along the x-axis such that v_Tom > v_Mary > v_Joe. Do Joe and Mary measure the same kinetic energy for Tom? Explain why or why not. If they are different, which one is larger and why? Let A rightarrow = 5.0 m at 60 degree above the horizontal axis. Let D have a magnitude of 10 m. If A rightarrow B rightarrow = 43.3 m^2 find the angle thetaAB between the vectors and all possible solutions for B rightarrow. A force F rightarrow = (6x=2y) N acts on a particle that undergoes a displacement Delta r rightarrow = (3x+y) m. Find (a) The work done by the force on the particle and (b) the angle between F rightarrow and Delta r rightarrow. A force F rightarrow = (4x x + 3y y) N acts on an object as the object moves in the x direction from the origin to x = 5 m. Find the work done by the force on the object. A baseball outfielder throws a 0.15 kg baseball at a speed of 40 m/s and an initial angle of 30 degree. What is the kinetic energy of the baseball at the highest point of its trajectory? What is the kinetic energy just before it hits the ground? How much work is done by the gravitational force during its time in the air? You may ignore air resistance.

Explanation / Answer

(A).
Force that does no work on the Pendulum = tension in the cord.
It just maintains the spacing of the pendulum from the pivot.

(B)
Force that does negative work on the system = Air resistance.
It attempts to work opposite in direction to any movement.

(c)
Work Done by Gravitational Force,
When Pendulum reaches it's Max Height at Either Ends, Total Energy of the system is given by Potential Energy = m*g*h .

Gravitational Force brings back the Pendulum from it;s Max height back to the ground which in case turns all the potential Energy to Kinetic Energy at Ground. Gravity does positive work on the pendulum on the downward swing and Negative on the upward swing.
