Question

A basket of banane of mass 2.0 kg is hanging from a spring scale that is held by a student riding an elevator. Starting from rest at the bottom floor, the elevator ascends, attaining its maximum speed of 1.25 m/s in 1.43 s. It travels with this constant speed for the next 8.20 s. The elevator then slows down for 2.45 s and comes to rest at the top level. (Use 10 N/kg for g and the upward direction as positive.)

a) What is the acceleration of the apple basket during the first 1.43 s? Answer in units of m/s2 and use the upward direction as positive.

b) How many forces act on the apple basket during this elevator ride?

c) What does the spring scale register in N during the first 1.43 s?

d) What does the spring scale register in N during the 9.20 s period?

e) What does the spring scale register in N during the 2.55 s period?

Explanation / Answer

here,

mass of the bucket , m = 2 kg
(a)

the accelration of apple basket be a

time taken , t = 1.43 s

final speed , v1 = 1.25 s

using first equation of motion

v = u + a*t

1.25 = 0 + a * 1.43

a = 0.87 m/s^2

the acccelration of the appple basket is 0.87 m/s^2

(b)

the forces acting on the basket is gravitational force and spring force

(c)

N = m*g + m*a

N = 2 *( 10 + 0.87)

N = 21.74 N

the spring scale register 21.74 N reading

(d)

N = m*g

N = 20 N

the spring scale register 20 N readingduring the 8.2 s peroiod
