Question
A basket of negligible weight hangs from a vertical spring scale of force constant 1500 N/m .
Part A
If you suddenly put a 3.00 kg adobe brick in the basket, find the maximum distance that the spring will stretch.

Part B
If, instead, you release the brick from 1.00 m above the basket, by how much will the spring stretch at its maximum elongation?
l =
0.198
cm

Explanation / Answer
a) m*g = k* x
3*10 = 1500* x
=> x = 0.02 m = 2 cm
b) but velocity of brick at the time contact = square root(2*g*h) = square root(2*10*1) = 4.472 m/s
so this becomes the initial velocity for SHM and hence solving for SHM,
we get amplitude A = initial velocity / square root (k/m) = 4.472 / square root(1500/3) = 0.2 m = 20 cm.
