Question

Hello,
this is probably a stupid question but I need to clear it up.
In my bio class, the teacher said that "genes are segments of DNA, and that there are 2 copies per cell (mom+dad)".

Question: There are 2 copies of DNA per cell (in humans), and one copy is attributed to a "mother" and the other a "father". What is the relationship between the copies of DNA and the parents, since it cannot be the case that two separate parents contributed identical copies of DNA?

Further explanation of what is confusing me below, in case my question is unclear:

My question is about the idea of the copies of DNA per cell and their relation to "mom" and "dad". I imagine that when she says "2 copies" per cell, that she means two identical copies of DNA inside the cell of a person. But then she said that thing about "mom and dad". It almost sounded like she was saying that one copy of DNA is from the mother and that the other copy is from the father.

Explanation / Answer

genetic constitution of an individual -------------------46,xx 0R 46,XY OR 22 PAIRS OF AUTOSOMES +ONE PAIR SEX CHROMOSOMES

22 PAIRS ARE ---HOMOLOGOUS PAIRS OF CHROMOSOMES(DNA)

SPERM FORM -------FATHER
OVA FORM -------MOTHER

SPERM+OVA------>ZYGOTE --INTO AN INDIVIDUAL
22 X OR 22 Y + 22 X------------> FORMATION OF 46,xx 0R 46,XY

SO OUT 46,xx 0R 46,XY

HALF FROM MOTHER

HALF FROM FATHER

IT IS NOTHING BUT 22 PAIRS OF HOMOLOGOUS CHROMOSOMES

ON PAIR OF SEX CHROMOSOME
