Attached is the picture of the essential components of a Mass Spectrometer. Samples start at the top of the drawing and are heated to produce a gas. That gas produces ions of different masses (m1 , m2 and so on) all singly ionized to a charge of q=e+ . As the ions are produced an accelerating voltage (?V) is applied (before the two pinholes) in order to start them moving towards the detector.
