Question

Two masses m1 and m2 are connected by a massless string which runs over a massless frictionless pulley. The table is FRICTIONLESS, and you may assume that the string is always tight (there is never any slack). The masses are free to move if they should. how does the tension acting on m1 compare with the weight of m2?

Are the masses accelerating?

How does the tension acting on m2 compare with the weight of m2?

How does the magnitude of the tension acting on m1 compare with the magnitude of the tension acting on m2?

How does the magnitude of the tension acting on m1 compare with the weight of m2?

Explanation / Answer

because we have   massless frictionless pulley. so there will be same tension in entire string

and yes mass will be accelerating with accleration a =

a = (m2-m1)*g / (m1+m2)

m2 compare with the weight of m2

on m2

m2*g - T = m2*a

T = (g-a)*m2

or tension acting on m2 will be less than weight of m2

How does the magnitude of the tension acting on m1 compare with the magnitude of the tension acting on m2?

they are same in magnitude

How does the magnitude of the tension acting on m1 compare with the weight of m2?

tension on m1

T = m1*a

and weight of m2 = m2*g
