Question
A firecracker breaks up into several pieces, one of which has a mass of 283 g and flies off along the x-axis with a speed of 83 m/s. A second piece has a mass of 261 g and flies off along the y-axis with a speed of 42 m/s. What is the magnitude of the total momentum of these two pieces? (Give answers to the nearest 0.1 kgm/s)
For the problem above, what is the direction of the total momentum of these two pieces? Assume the first piece has a mass of 149 g and flies off along the x-axis with a speed of 84 m/s, and the second piece has a mass of 371 g and flies off along the y-axis with a speed of 49 m/s. (Give answers to the nearest 0.1o from the positive x-axis.)
(I got 5.9 for the first problem, posting it because it is related, just wanna make sure i have it right.)
Explanation / Answer
total momentum of these pieces is Sqrt[(0.283*83)^2 +(0.261*42)^2] = 25.92 kg*m/s
direction is theta = atan((0.261*42)/(0.283*83)) = 25.01 degrees with X-axis
