Your task is to trace the ray through the block. From Figure 2 you know immediately that nothing very interesting happens at the first surface and the real problem starts at surface 2, the angled surface at the back. You can assume a right triangle here and that the incident ray is along a surface normal to the first surface. Apply Snella?s Law to the angled surface, then trace the ray through, again until it exits the page. As before, assume the air outside the block has an index of 1.00 and the block an index of 1.50. Describe any interesting features that you encountered in this exercise here. Again, show any calculation you make on the page with the ray trace

Explanation / Answer

The ray from the left comes in towards the rectangular block and strikes at the ist surface. The ray strike the ist surface at the angle of 90 degree, therefore it gone pass without any deflection. When it striked at the inclined side of the trianle at second surface, now here at this point the angle it made is 450 which is greater than the critical angle of glass and the ray is totol internally reflected.
