Question
The spin cycles of a washing machine have two angular speeds, 419rev/min and 609rev/min . The internal diameter of the drum is 0.680m .
What is the ratio of the maximum radial force on the laundry for the higher angular speed to that for the lower speed?
What is the ratio of the maximum tangential speed of the laundry for the higher angular speed to that for the lower speed?
Find the laundry's maximum tangential speed .
Find the laundry's maximum radial acceleration, in terms of g .
Explanation / Answer
1)F = mv^2/r = mrw^2
therefore ration is w1^2/w2^2 = (609/419)^2 = 2.112
2) v= rw
since r is same
therefore v1/v2 = w1/w2 = 609/419 = 1.4534
3)v =rw = 0.68 * 609 * 2pi/60 = 0.68 *63.774 = 43.36m/sec
4) a = v^2/r = g*43.36/(0.68*9.8) = 6.506g
