Question

The drawing shows light incident on a polarizer whose transmission axis is parallel to the z axis. The polarizer is rotated clockwise through an angle ?. The average intensity of the incident light is 3.4 W/m2. Determine the average intensity of the transmitted light for each of the six cases.

a) find the intensity of transmitted unpolarized light for a=0 degrees and a=35 degrees
b)find the intensity of transmitted polarized parallel to the z axis light for a=0 degrees and a=35 degrees
c) find the intensity of transmitted polarized parallel to the y axis light for a =0 degrees and a=35 degrees

Explanation / Answer

(a). When unpolarised light passes through the polariser shown in the question, the transmitted light is polarised and containes oscillations parallel to transmission axis only. Hence the transmitted light is polarised and not unpolarised.

(b). For a=0, transmitted light will contain oscillations parallel to z-axis only. Thus average intensity of polarised transmitted light parallel to z axis will be, I=I0/2

= 1.7 W/m2

For a=35 degrees, transmitted light will contain oscillations parallel to axis inclined at angle a with z-axis. Hence average intensity of light transmitted parallel to z-axis will be zero.

(c). None of the transmitted light will contain oscillations parallel to y-axis. Heance average intensity of transmitted polarized light parallel to y-axis will be zero for both cases.
