Question
Do you agree or disagree and why?
A major reason for the physician shortage is geographical location. Physicians are more likely to practice in urban areas due to improved technology, better living standards, and extensive professional opportunities (Shi, 2017). Interestingly, about 20% of the U.S. population lives in rural areas, but only 9% of the country’s physicians practice in rural communities (Rosenblatt, 2000). There is also a primary care physician shortage due to medical students opting for specialist positions over primary care positions. A major reason for this shortage is the increasing amount of debt a medical student has to incur. With the average private medical student debt of $200,000 and a specialty physician salary starting at around $223,000; it is assumed that more lucrative and higher paying positions are being sought out leaving a drastic shortage in primary care (Harris, 2018).
Explanation / Answer
Answer: I agree with these statement as we can see that thre is a shortage of the healthcare professionals, not only for the physicians but also there is a shortage of nurses etc. Due to the increasing amount of debt a medical student has to incur. It is assumed that more lucrative and higher paying positions are being sought out leaving a drastic shortage in primary care. The cost of medical study is very high and mostly very few students can afford it, so slowly there is a decline in the profession of the healthcare.
