Question
In an effort to encourage patient participation in their care and to help them feel more in control, your hospital manager has decided that upon patient check-in patients will enter their information on one of four new self-serve kiosks that were purchased. This allows nurses and other professionals the time they need to continue to work with other patients. What are two risks and two benefits of this potential system? As a patient how would this make you feel?
As the administrative liaison between upper-level administration and the nursing staff, you often field complaints and help to explain changes to the nursing staff. A senior nursing member has approached you that she believes that adding these kiosks will result in the reduction of the hospital workforce, and she is not in agreement. How would you explain this situation to her? Be sure to consider if you will or will not reduce the workforce after the implementation of the kiosks.
Explanation / Answer
Benefits of self serve kiosks-
1) Self serve kiosks will save the time of nursing staff in doing initial administrative work, which can be used in patient care, resulting in more effective outcome of patients progress and will also help to satisfy patients needs.
2) It will also reduce patients waiting time and minimize errors.
Risks of self serve kiosks
1) Therapeutic nurse patient relationship is very important for good outcome of patient recovery, which will be affected, as the first phase of orientation will be taken over by the kiosks.
2) some patients are more comfortable communicating and ventilating there feelings face to face, rather than with kiosks
As a patient my perception of kiosks
As a patient I feel that kiosks will reduce my waiting time which is very necessary in today's fast world. Manual paper work is time consuming and can lead to errors.
Explanation to senior nursing member
I will explain the senior nursing member that kiosks will be beneficial to the staff and will not lead to reduction of hospital workforce. Staff will get more time for nursing care rather than administrative work.kiosks will only reduced the staff workload and not workforce.
