Question

On a cruise, during the safety procedures drill, the First Mate hands you a normal ordinary life preserver. Then he hands your friend an identical life preserver, only that one is lled to the gills with lead pellets. Your friend complains to the Sailor saying this preserver is a one way trip to sinks-ville. The First mate states "Are you kidding?!?!? That Preserver produces a greater buoyant force than your friends (yours) life vest." Assuming you and your friend are identical spacial bodies, Defend or Reject the mate's statement with explanation.

Explanation / Answer

Life jackets save life because they are having air being filled in them, or they are having material which has extremly less density as compared to water, beacuse of which the life jacket floats.

Now the mate gave the life jacket which is was similar in all the ways only there were lead pellets at the gills. It is a fact that lead has higher density as compared to water. Hence lead will not floating if kept on water.

Henceforth the conlusion given by mate that the jacket has higher buoyancy, may be correct as addition of lead may add up the to the total weight of life jacket, but this will not help friend to float upon water, as the added weigth has higher density as compared to water.

So we conclude following
1) The mate made conclusion that life jacket having more weight will produce more buoyant force, is correct
2) But if he thinks that adding more weight will save life of friend then he is wrong, as lead is having higher density than water.
