Question

a-An ideal transformer has 15,000 windings in its primary coil and 10,000 windings in its secondary coil. The primary coil is connected to an RMS voltage of 120 volts. The secondary coil is connected to a single 6000-ohm resistor. What is the rms current through the secondary coil?

b-An ideal transformer has 10,000 windings in its primary coil and 10,000 windings in its secondary coil. The primary coil is connected to an RMS voltage of 120 volts. The secondary coil is connected to a single 6000-ohm resistor. What is the rms current through the primary coil?

Explanation / Answer

a)

Given

N1 = 15,000 turns

N2 = 10,000 turns

V1rms = 120 volts

Apply, V2rms/V1rms = N2/N1

V2rms = V1rms*(N2/N1)

= 120*(15000/10000)

= 180 volts

I2rms = V2rms/R2

= 180/6000

= 0.03 A or 30 mA

b)

Given

N1 = 10,000 turns

N2 = 10,000 turns

V1rms = 120 volts

Apply, V2rms/V1rms = N2/N1

V2rms = V1rms

= 120 volts

I2rms = V2rms/R

= 120/6000

= 0.02 A or 20 mA

here, I1rms = I2rms

= 0.02 A or 20 mA
