Question

ab 3 Body composition MI Questions: The client is a 23 yrs. old competitive weight lifter. He is 6'3 tall and weighs 245 lbs. (111.4 kg). What is his BMI? Do you believe that this would be an appropriate assessment technique for this athlete? Why or Why not? (1pt) 1. Your client has just completed a strenuous workout and you perform electrical impedance testing. How would the results be affected if the subject was tested after a strenuous exercise session rather than before the exercise session? Why do the changes occur? (1 pt.) 2.

Explanation / Answer

1. Weight of the client =111.4kg

Height of the client is 6'3"= 6foot =( 6* 0.305) 1.83m, 3inch =( 0.0254 *3) 0.076 metres, total =1.906metres

BMI ( body mass index) = WEIGHT IN KG/HEIGHT IN (M)SQUARE:-

= 111.4/1.906* 1.906

= 30.6 (obese)

According to BMI , the weight lifter is obese . When BMI is used for persons who are body builders or athletes we encounter a problem, because BMI uses body weight and body weight is determined by muscle and fat composition . Athletes and body builders are heavily muscled people and muscle weight more than fat these people will be overweight or obese according to BMI chart. So , if a person is an athlete or a body builder do not use BMI as the only method to assess the body composition . An estimation of body fat using the skinfold method would be more accurate .

2. Electrical impedance test is a test in which the resistance against the flow of current is measured.

Before a strenuous exercise session the resistance against the flow of current will be more as compared to after the strenuous exercise session because in this test the resistance is related to the amount of water , electrolytes, and lean tissue and after having a strenuous exercise session there is an excessive loss of water , electrolytes and lean tissue which will lead to decrease in resistance.
