Question
A rocket-propelled projectile of mass 2,500kg has a thrust force of 35kN from its engine. Aerodynamic forces are negligible and the thrust force is in the direction of motion.
When the projectile is at the peak of its trajectory, calculate:
(a) its tangential acceleration
(b) its normal acceleration and
(c) the magnitude of its total acceleration.
(d) If its speed is 1400m/s, calculate the power of the engine in MW and in hp.
PLACE A STEP BY STEP SOLUTION. I ASKED THIS QUESTION BEFORE AND I GOT ANSWERS BUT I NEED A SECOND OPNION/SOLUTION!
Explanation / Answer
Given that,
Mass of the projectile = M = 2500 Kg ; F(thrust) = 35 kN = 35000 N
(a)Tangential acceleration of the rocket will be given by;
a(t) = F/M = 35000 / 2500 = 14 m/s2
hence, tagential acceletaion = a(t)= 14 m/s2
(b)Norm9nal acceleration would be the same as tangential acceleration.
a(t) = a(n) = 14 m/s2
(c)Total aceletaion will be
a(total) = a(t) - g = 14 - 9.8 = 4.2 m/s2
(d) Power is force times the velocity
P = F x v
P = 35000 x 1400 = 49000000 Watts
Hence, Power of the engine is P = 49 MW = 65710.08 hp.
