Question

What do you predict happens to Glycophorin (which normally is expressed only in RBCs-erythrocytes) when it is experimentally inserted into the apical membrane of an intestinal epithelial cell?
A.The Glycophorin diffuses throughout the entire plasma membrane in less than one hour. B.The Glycophorin enters the cytoplasm of a neighboring cell through a gap junction. C.The Glycophorin incorporates into hemidesmosomes. D.The Glycophorin remains confined to the apical membrane. Explanation / Answer

In intestinal epithelial there is polarity in plasma membrane, the side of the plasma membrane facing lumen is called apical membrane and side facing the basal lamina is called basolateral membrane. This is achieved by tight junctions which prevent the free diffusion of proteins from apical to basolateral surface and vice versa. Therefore glycophorin inserted into the apical surface of epithelial cells will remain confined to the apical surface.
