Question

The figure shows a conducting rod moving to the left over a conducting frame which has a connection with resistance R = 3.0 ohm at its left end. The rod itself and the tracks have no resistance. A uniform magnetic field B = 1.1 T is directed into the plane. Use the values v = 5 m/s and w = 35 cm. (a) Find the EMF |epsilon| induced in the circuit (the circuit is on the left of the moving bar). (b) Find the current I in the circuit. (c) Is the current I clockwise or counterclockwise? d) Find the force F_app (magnitude and direction; to the right or the left) that has to be applied to the bar to move it to the right at the given constant velocity v.

Explanation / Answer

a) emf induced = B * L * v

                           = 1.1 * 0.35 * 5

                            =   1.925 V

b)    current in circuit = 1.925/3

                                   = 0.6416 A

c)     current is clockwise .

d)    Force applied = I * L * B

                               =   0.6416 * 0.35 * 1.1

                             =    0.247   N

=>   Direction = to the right .
