A uniform rod AB, of mass 5 kg and length 2.0, is free to rotate in a vertical plane about a fixed horizontal axis through A. The rod is at rest with B vertically below A when a constant torque (or moment), tau, is applied to the rod. It then rotates, and comes instantaneously to rest when AB is horizontal. a) Determine the magnitude of the torque tau. b) Give the expression of the moment of inertia of the rod with respect to A. c) Find the angular acceleration of the rod i) Immediately after the torque is applied. ii) When AB is horizontal.Explanation / Answer
a) magnitude of Torque = 5 * 9.8 * 1
= 49 N-m
b) Moment of inertia = 1/3 * 5 * 2 * 2
= 6.67 kg-m2
c) i) angular acceleration = 49 * 2/6.67
= 14.692 rad/sec2
ii) angular acceleration = 49/6.67
= 7.346 rad/sec2
