Question
In a hydraulic system, a boy of mass m is standing on one of the movable pistons that is a disc of radius R. (a) What is the pressure in the hydraulic fluid? (b) What is the magnitude of the force exerted on another movable piston that has the form of a square with side a? (c) What is the mass m_2 of the load that should be put on the other piston to balance the hydraulic system? A 200 g piece of ice at initial temperature 0degreeC is added to 1 L water at initial temperature 100degreeC. What is the final temperature of the system?Explanation / Answer
a)
Pressure in fluid (P) = F/A
since area of disk is pi R^2
P = mg/ pi R2
(b)
from the Pascal prinicple
F1/A1 = F2/A2
since area of square is A2= a^2
mg/ pi*R^2 = F2/ a^2
F2 = a^2 *(mg/ pi*R^2 )
(c)
F2 = m2 g
m2 = a^2 *(mg/ pi*R^2 )/g = a^2 *(m/ pi*R^2 )
