Question
A taxi driver fills up his cab early in the morning when the temperature is 0 oC and the density of gasoline is 730 kg/m3. Assuming he purchases 40 litres of gas at this temperature, how many extra kilograms of gasoline will he get by filling up then , rather than if he waited later in the day when the temperature of the gas is 20.0 oC, assuming (1) the pump is not temperature compensated, and (2) = 9.60 X 10-4 K-1 for gasoline (3) The temperature of the car, and the gas tank, remain constant. thank you
Explanation / Answer
Here,
initial volume ,Vi = 40 litres
change in volume = B * delta T * Vi
change in volume = 40 * (20 - 0) * 9.6 *10^-4
change in volume = 0.768 litre
extra mass of petrol = density * change in volume
extra mass of petrol = 0.768 * 0.730
extra mass of petrol = 0.561 Kg
the extra mass of petrol in morning is 0.561 Kg
