PHYS 101 section EA5 ccbc Spring 2015 exam 1 directions: show all work. Circle or box your answers. Put your name on each page. 1. A man is pushed out of a window of an apartment building. He is 10 meters high when he goes through the window with a velocity of 1.5 m/s, in the HORIZONTAL direction. A dumpster is located 2.5 m away from the edge of the building at ground level and is 1 m wide. How far away from the building does the man land? Does he land in the dumpster? 2. The man who was pushed through the window has a mass of 50 kg and was pushed with a force of 50 N. what was the man's acceleration? Ignore friction. F mc. a rn 8. An object is thrown straight up with an initial velocity of 25 m/s. What height does it reach beginning to fall back down? VVo2sXay) A vehicle accelerates from zero to 28 m/s in 5 seconds. How much distance does the vehicle pefore avel during this acceleration?

Explanation / Answer

Here, h = 10 m.

Time taken by the man to land on the ground, t -

10 = 0 + 0.5*9.81*t^2

=> t^2 = 2.0387

=> t = 1.43 s.

During this period, horizontal distance travelled by the person -

d = t*1.5 = 1.43*1.5 = 2.145 m

So, the man will land 2.145 m away from the building.

Again, since the dumpster is 2.5 m away from the building, so the man will not land on the dumster.
